The Boulder Homeless Shelter was completed in 2003 to provide safe shelter, food and support services to all those in need. Since every dollar saved allows the shelter to help more people, the importance of a financially viable structure with low operating costs cannot be overstated. A cost-effective steel stud exterior bearing wall system was selected early during design development. To maintain a minimum building height, the mechanical ductwork was housed within the structural framing system. Energy saving features incorporated into this two story, 31,300 sq ft building include a geothermal heat exchange system for hot water and a large solar collector array installed for electricity.

MIXED-USE
Viale Collegio is a three-story, mixed-use building located in Fort Collins, Colorado. This 35,000 sq ft building is comprised of parking and retail on the ground level, office space on the second level with residential housing on the third level. One of the engineering challenges for this project was to contain the structure within the required building height limits. Ascent’s solution: to utilize the composite steel deck and concrete slab as a platform for the wood bearing walls above, allowing for reduced structure depth. This solution provided the architectural integrity required for the building and maintained a cost-effective solution for the client.

MIXED-USE
The Ascent Group repeatedly teams up with leading local developers and architects to co-create our city. Downtown Boulder often requires working with and around existing structures. In this case, incorporating a 100-year old existing structure into the design of this mixed-use building proved challenging.
Ascent used resourceful engineering techniques to create a framing layout that eliminated new loads on the existing foundation. Re-using the existing structure saved our client both time and money over the duration of the project. In addition, by maintaining this structure, the offices in the building were able to remain open during construction and dramatic structural modifications to the existing structure were avoided.

MIXED-USE
Longmont has taken great steps toward its downtown
redevelopment. This mixed-use building bookends the
north side of the central business district. The beauty
of the design relied on large open areas, contemporary
building materials and contemporary architectural
details for a modern, urban feel. Large open areas are
featured on the interior which required long spans of
structural elements to minimize the use of interior
columns. Through creative problem solving, the Ascent
Group created a framing layout which maintained this
open, airy feeling consistent with today’s urban lofts.

Montego is an 11 unit, 42,000 sq ft condominium building located in Oceanside, California overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The west side of this dynamic building has an expansive glass façade utilizing its premier beach front location and ocean views.
The Ascent Group designed the structure of this five-story building with two levels of post tension concrete platforms and three levels of wood construction. The two lower levels support sub-grade parking.

Plaza at Ranch Reserve is an 18,000 sq ft shopping
plaza located in Westminster, Colorado. The Ascent
Group was hired by Olson Architecture to provide the
structural engineering for this retail project.
This outdoor retail center is constructed of a
structural steel core and a light gage steel shell. The
roof is composed of steel bar joists and a timber trussed
mansard around the perimeter. The complexity of this
structure resides in the undulating facade and
breezeways which demanded unique design solutions.

Go Motors is an import car dealership located in Boulder, Colorado. This building features exposed steel beams and columns with an expansive glass storefront as the centerpiece to the architectural design. The Ascent Group provided structural engineering design and construction administration services for this project.
The construction of this showroom and service area consists of concrete CMU bearing walls with structural steel and steel bar joists, roof and floor systems. The long and narrow footprint combined with the open service area presented a few minor
design challenges during the design of this building.

The Tierra Center project consists of three office buildings, A, E and F, located in the Tierra Center Business Park in East Boulder. The three two-story concrete tilt-up buildings include over 118,500 sq ft of finished office space. Unique design challenges consisted of engineering the concrete wall panels for the large window openings on the exterior of the building. A custom design solution was also required for the panel-to-panel connections which are atypical for this type of concrete tilt-up building.

CUSTOM-RESIDENTIAL
One of Boulder’s finest residential structures, this 8,200 sq ft custom home was architecturally innovative requiring equally innovative engineering techniques. Maintaining architectural integrity was critical to the aesthetics of this home. Expansive, frameless windows, numerous floor and roof cantilevers, a large retaining wall, an outdoor water feature, acrylic panels in the exterior wall and many more architectural details required the sophistication of creative engineering. Ascent worked closely with the architect throughout the structural analysis and design of this extremely complex project.

INDUSTRIAL
Vista Industrial is a 33,000 sq ft tilt-up concrete structure located in one of Lafayette’s industrial parks. A simple and efficient structure was designed to meet the client’s demanding construction budget. Keeping the construction costs low allowed for competitive lease rates for several small industrial businesses. The flexible, open floor plan was accomplished by designing a long span steel bar joist roof system that eliminated unnecessary interior columns. The structure of this building includes 26 foot tall tilt-up concrete bearing walls on the exterior that provide high bay interior spaces and include elevated composite steel mezzanines.

CIVIL
Specialty Enterprises is an office park in Westminster, Colorado. The project consisted of two, single-story office buildings which required preliminary and final subdivision plat approval. The Ascent Group was hired to provide civil engineering services for this commercial development.
The civil design proved challenging with the drainage outlet at street elevation and inherently flat terrain. Detailed grading was required as well as a complex stormwater directive into a detention pond at the far corner of the property.
